Can Obama Beat McCain?

By Dan | May 29, 2008

With my morning screed about Obama behind me it is time to examine the general election matchup of Obama vs. McCain. Right now, Obama is leading in many polls, but not necessarily in electoral votes. Obama has many advantages, the media worships him and tries to hide his flaws. McCain has thoroughly pissed off his base, over and over again. The Republican party is in the middle of an identity crisis and they are acting like a bunch of mice and hiding in their holes.

With all of the advantages that Obama has he leads by the narrowest of majorities in most polls and has recently fallen behind McCain in the Rasmussen tracking poll.

In addition Obama is the most extreme candidate since McGovern. He appeals mostly to intellectuals and blacks with policy proposals that are way out of line from what the average American wants. White woring class voters, the majority of the electorate, have not warmed up to Obama.

Maybe it is because he thinks the typical white person is a racist, or maybe it has something to do with them clinging to their guns and religion. Reality is that most voters still have not heard about these things, they are not even paying attention yet.

This should be very disturbing for Obama supporters. As Liberty Pundit points out, Obama has become just another Democrat; he has lost his luster and the “messiah” image that he was carrying. He is making gaffes and being caught in lies and/or distortions daily. All of this while the media is on his side. His poll numbers seem to have topped out around 48%, meanwhile his negatives are on the rise.

It is apparent that the more the voters get to know Obama the less they like him. His elitism, his apparent lack of patriotism, and his extreme policy views and his extremist friends all work against him. If the election were held today Obama would have a good chance but unless he can find a way to cover up his negatives or do more to exploit McCain’s weaknesses he cannot win this election.
