When Will McCain Start Campaigning?

By Dan | June 10, 2008

Flopping Aces has a great post about the divisions within the Democratic party:

Many Hillary Democrats seem to be taking a serious, principled stand in opposing Obama. It is not that they like McCain. They just think Obama would be very bad for America. After 8 years of George W. Bush, you would think party loyalty would prevail at all costs. But you would be wrong.

He goes on to lay out all of the groups within the Democratic Party that oppose Obama and the reasons for their opposition.

There is no question that the Democratic Party is divided and their candidate has serious flaws. His inexperience is obvious in the important areas of foreign policy and the economy. He has a pattern of associating with anti-American preachers, criminals and terrorists. He comes across as an elitist and does not appeal to white working class voters, a major party of the Democratic base.

With all of these divisions in the party and the weakness of the candidate McCain has a great opportunity in front of him. Right now he is squandering it. McCain is not taking advantage of his opponents weaknesses. Instead of laying out his plan for America and his vision of the future he is playing defense.

McCain is allowing Obama to set the agenda. I know that the General Election has just started, but he did amazingly little while the Democrats fought each other. He gave one ill-advised speech looking back on his first term. Other than that he has failed to let the American People know why they should elect him.

McCain may not be a great public speaker, that is why he is trying to have town-hall meetings, and that is good strategy for him. Still, you do not get better at something by avoiding it. Town-halls are great for listening to the voters, but they do not help you to lay out your vision like a speech can. They also don’t get as much media coverage and are prime territory for gaffes and misstatements.

McCain is missing his opportunity to win over disaffected democrats and angry Hillary supporters by avoiding speech making. If he were to lay out a positive vision for the future of America, a future with smaller government and more freedom. A future in which the American people are free from overbearing government regulation. A future where America is no longer dependent on foreign oil because we are free to explore for energy in our own country.

McCain needs to stop sniping at Obama and instead define himself. He needs to play up his positives right now and contrast himself against Obama later. McCain has a lot to offer this country, he is a war hero and he has spent his life serving his country. Now he needs to show us that he can lead us back to the greatness that we knew.

The American people are tired of all the negativity coming out of Washington. The media and the Democratic Party are always telling us how bad and how evil America is. Will McCain step up and tell us how great we can be again? If he does he will win this election going away.
